4 FAQs About Smart Controls

by Hickerson Brothers on September 21, 2018

smart controls

So, you’re one of the few homeowners left on the block who hasn’t converted to smart controls yet because there are still questions to be answered. That’s OK! We understand the overwhelming nature of their intricacies, not to mention the sheer fact there are so many types of devices out there. At Hickerson Brothers, we want you to know that our team hears you and wants to provide you with some peace of mind. We have taken four of the most common questions homeowners ask and provided to-the-point answers.

1. What is smart technology?

With thousands of electronic devices on the market, it’s not always clear which device is smart and which isn’t. It’s commonly thought that a device is smart if it’s connected to the internet. The truth is, that’s just part of the equation. For a device to be smart it also needs to have interactive and remote sharing capabilities via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. What distinguishes a smart device from others is that it should operate autonomously to some extent.

Here are some of the most common smart devices homeowners install or use:

  • Watches
  • Thermostats
  • TVs
  • Speakers
  • Cameras & Locks
  • Lights
  • Vacuums
  • Sprinklers

2. How will smart controls benefit me?

Smart controls, by definition, exist to make homeowners’ lives more convenient and stress-free. By adding smart technology to your home, you can expect to lower your utility costs, not to mention it’ll be nice not having to worry about whether you remembered to adjust the thermostat, turn off all the lights, or lock the front door before leaving. For an in-depth look at the many benefits, check out this article from SFGATE.

If you’re looking to kick back and let someone (or something) else do the hard work, then smart controls will make the perfect addition to your home. We understand that figuring out where to start in the transformation process can be overwhelming. Our team is here to assist you every step of the way. From helping you choose which smart controls will benefit you the most, to the installation process, to teaching you how to operate them we’ve got you covered. Just give us a call and we’ll schedule your appointment!

3. Are there any credits or rebates for installing such devices?

Yes! While this is technically another benefit of home automation, we feel this question is important enough to warrant its own section. The Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit applies to the installation of energy efficient heating, cooling and water heating equipment. We recommend checking with your local power company to learn about their own incentive programs too.

4. Are there safety or vulnerability concerns with having a smart home?

While smart controls are meant to provide undeniable peace of mind and convenience, some home automation can present safety and privacy concerns. Before adding a smart control to your home, make sure to read its privacy policy. In some cases, a company may collect and share your personal data.

Another common concern for homeowners is the possibility of being hacked. Make sure your network is properly secured and that your passwords are unique. Never use sequential numbers, common phrases or your name.

Hickerson Safety Tip: Instead of connecting your smart device to Wi-Fi, hard-wire it to the internet, as this method tends to be more secure.
